Power and glamour?

Yesterday I was reading Vogue (British) and there was an article about power and glamour. They were discussing the fact that women in positions of power (like CEO:s, politicians etc) have been forced to compromise there femininity in order to be taken seriously. Women have not been able to wear whatever they like because people will focus on their clothes rather than their message.

Allow me to scream THIS SHIT SUCKS!

Off course Vogue has found some serious powerhouse women who dress with style and enjoys success in her respective field which is great. But what about Sweden?

Mona Sahlin (Swedish high-ranking politician, leader of the Social Democratic Party) has been photographed carrying a designer handbag. I say, whatever. Why can't she wear any handbag she likes? Other than that she is doing the trouser-suit outfit... although sometimes in bright colors!

What is the problem? Why has women got to diminish themselves in order to be taken seriously? I think it's partly because women didn't get access to positions of power until quite recently and therefore they have been assimilated to the corporate structure including clothes. They try to look/act like men. But they should not have to.

We, the women, need to back up (I sound like a feminist now!) our sisters! If we can't even allow other women to dress like they please how will men? We need to support each other and stand fast in our believes that a political message is as important whether it'll come from a fat old guy in a suit or a young girl in a dress. Focus on what's being said! And all of you tossers working in the media- stop letting articles about "she cannot be a good leader for a party promoting welfare for all if she wears an expensive bag" get into your magazine!

Now, what do you reckon about this? Please, share your opinion as a comment!

Kan rekommendera Ulla Wikanders (2006) bok "Kvinnoarbete i Europa 1789-1950" om du vill ha ett historiskt perspektiv på det hela.

Well, I tend to plan what to wear for important meetings. Being short, looking quite young and with a very girly voice I feel that I need to look serious and the clothes I wear play a big role in that. But I would say that is the same thing for a man. My husband always pays attention to what he is wearing. I never compromise my femininity though, I love skirts and dresses way too much. But I would not wear them too short, or too girly. Does it make sense?

The Mona Sahlin and the LV bag story, isn't that typically Swedish? In France people would not react, for them it is not for a politician to go dressed in clothes from Eram.

No one questions Reinfeldt's watches, suits or shoes. And they shouldn't, just like they shouldn't question Mona's choices. Being a politician is tough and they should be payed well. What they do with their money is up to them.

So, basically, I totally agree with you! :)

Kunde inte hålla med dig mer där! Det är så paradoxalt att manliga politiker samtidigt har omega-klockor som säkert är värda minst det dubbla av värdet för mona sahlins LV-väska. Och det är det ingen som reagerar på!
